The International Surface Event (TISE), held at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas January 29 to February 1, is the largest North American event serving the floor covering, stone and tile industries. TISE comprises SURFACES, StonExpo/Marmomacc Americas and Tile Expo. Together, these three tradeshows offer new products, hands-on demos, inspiring trends, education and networking.

More than 60 vendors rang in the first week of the new year at the Southeast Flooring Market, held at the Cobb Galleria Centre, January 3-4. Hundreds of flooring buyers from the region came to check out 2018 introductions and network with their local sales representatives. Mohawk and Shaw exhibited in their own spaces, kicking off a month of regional shows for the manufacturers.

At the New Lab in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Wednesday, October 25, Humanscale and Mohawk Group partnered up for another evening of discussion for their Sustainability Talk Series: How Transparency is Changing the World. The series, which also took place in Boston on October 24 and Washington, D.C. on October 26, shed light on commercial manufacturing transparency, the intersectionality of sustainability and design, and how companies can achieve transparency as well as a positive impact within the natural world and within their communities.

With four keynotes, more than 25 CEUs, and over 150 exhibitors, NeoCon East, held Nov. 15-16 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, treated the East Coast design community to two productive days of programming, networking, and products.
Exhibiting companies gained valuable direct contact with key architects, designers and major corporate and government end users, while attending professionals gained insight and access to the latest ideas and innovations in the industry. Many exhibitors have already reported strong project leads and business opportunities, according to show organizers.

Members of Flooring America, Flooring Canada, International Design Guild and The Floor Trader convened August 6-8 at Salt Lake City's Salt Palace Convention Center for Building Buzz, where members explored new paths to grow in their marketplace.
The event featured a keynote from Jamie Clarke, CEO of LiveOutThere.com, founder of the Out There Adventure Centre, a brick-and-mortar store in downtown Calgary and LiveOutThere.com, a one of Canada’s 50 fastest-growing ecommerce sites. Clarke gave pointers on how to invigorate teams and succeed in any endeavor. Members attended educational sessions designed to help them improve their skills and strategies in sales, marketing and management and a trade show where they saw the latest introductions and promotions from vendor partners.

One of the highlights of Starnet’s spring meeting was the 19th Annual Starnet Design Awards, which honored commercial flooring design projects from across the country. From iconic international sports venues to a children’s hospital to a whimsical corporate headquarters, this year’s winners captured the flooring installations that are driving commercial interior design forward.
“The Design Awards served as a reminder that 25 years of dedication to excellence in flooring design, installation and environmental stewardship has helped to create some of the most incredible commercial spaces in the country,” said Jeanne Matson, president and CEO of Starnet.
This year’s panel of judges included Deborah P. Elliott, co-founder and design principal at ID Studios in Solana Beach, Calif.; Stephanie Crane, principal at Shlemmer+Algaze+Associates in Culver City, Calif.; and Sascha Wagner, president and CEO of Huntsman Architectural Group in San Francisco. Honorary Judges for the Environmental Achievement and Unique Installation Challenge Awards were Robert Peoples, executive director of Carpet American Recovery Effort (CARE) and Robert Varden, vp of Certified Flooring Installers.
