The International Certified Flooring Installers Association's (CFI) carpet master-II test—in addition to CFI carpet, resilient, ceramic, laminate and wood certification—will be offered in Fort Wayne, Ind., Aug. 4 to 8.

Installers who participate are required to have successfully completed the Residential I, Residential II, Commercial I and Commercial II certifications. With the deposit of $100, the written test can be taken prior to the date at any CFI event, or the installer may arrive early to complete it onsite prior to the onset of the testing. Applicants are to submit a resume of work history, letters of recommendation, the four-page CFI Master-II application and proof of 10 years of carpet installation experience.

There is no assistance available. Testing requirements include seaming of difficult carpets; knowledge of handsewing; skill to properly estimate, manage and staff large commercial installations; proficiency in conversing with client concerning custom installations; proficient in the art of pattern alignment; essential knowledge of moisture, alkalinity and substrate preparation procedures; direct-glue and double-glue installation skills; displays the necessary people skills to assist industry personnel; exhibits ability to identify and explain correct carpet and cushion for various types of applications; demonstrates ability to hand sew bullnose stairs and borders on curved staircases; readily identifies 25 carpet backings and demonstrates skill; knowledge of modular tile, wall base, stair tread and transition installations and completion of a detailed commercial seaming and accessories blueprint.

"The CFI Master-II designation is a requirement for specific installations and one that is held in high esteem," according to a CFI representative.

Attendance is limited because of the number of modules that are available.
