For 19-year-old Jason, a sophomore at University of West Georgia, day-to-day mobility has challenges: he uses a power wheelchair to get around and he is dependent on someone to assist him with personal care.

Born prematurely weighing just 2 pounds, 9 ounces, Jason spent 86 days in the neonatal intensive care unit, and by age one was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and dystonia. At home, he has relied on family to shower and dress him. It's a different experience at camp where accessible design provides him more independence and ability to do things as other teens would do. Sunshine on a Ranney Day, a nonprofit organization that reimagines and builds custom rooms for children and young adults with special needs, stepped in to create the same level of accessibility at home that he experienced at camp.

“We took a space that was totally unaccessible for Jason and opened it up and made a bathroom for him and a dream bedroom," said Joe Lane, executive director, Sunshine on a Ranney Day. "The dream bedroom included Mohawk's SolidTech floor, which is an incredible floor that we’ve been able to use in many of makeovers.”

Combining the beauty of hardwood and the waterproof durability of luxury vinyl flooring, SolidTech offers 100-percent waterproof performance, stain and scratch protection and dent resistance.

“Mohawk donated SolidTech Founders Trace Dash of Pepper flooring to Jason’s bedroom, which is actually the seventh time this year we donated SolidTech to a Sunshine on a Ranney Day project," said Olivia West, public relations coordinator, Mohawk. "We love SolidTech for a space like this because it’s such a durable floor. It’s waterproof, it’s scratch and stain resistant, it’s easy to clean, and it can withstand a lot of activity.”

Aside from going to camp, Jason is an Atlanta Falcons fan and loves going to the movies with friends and family to watch Marvel movies. These interests were subtly incorporated into the design of his bedroom.

“For this room I really wanted to focus on a mature room that he could continue to grow into,” said Lindsay Ellington, senior graduate designer at Randall-Paulson Architects. “I tried to incorporate subtle touches of his some of his interests but really keep an elevated design."
