Mohawk is partnering once again with Sunshine on a Ranney Day, an Atlanta-based nonprofit that renovates homes for children with special needs, to provide light and greater independence for two deserving children. Mohawk has been a proud partner of Sunshine on a Ranney Day since 2013, providing high-quality flooring for the charity’s home renovation projects. Mohawk’s recent donations include SolidTech flooring for Nygil’s bedroom and bathroom makeover in Fayetteville, Ga. and Priscilla’s bathroom makeover in Decatur, Ga.
Founded in 2012 by Peter and Holly Ranney, Sunshine on a Ranney Day specializes in wheelchair accessible bathrooms, dream bedrooms, in-home therapy rooms and wheelchair ramps/lifts. Since these home modifications are completed at no cost to the families, the organization relies on the support of its partners and volunteers.
“Every child should have a unique space of his or her own, and Sunshine on a Ranney Day helps achieve just that,” said Laura Bartley, senior director of marketing communications and events, Mohawk. “Our contribution of innovative products, such as SolidTech, enhances the living spaces for these children and provides a new-found ease of mobility and maintenance.”
SolidTech combines the beauty of hardwood with the waterproof durability of luxury vinyl flooring. Because it is 100% waterproof, stain resistant and features a no-gap guarantee that prevents cupping and gapping, SolidTech is an ideal fit for both Sunshine on a Ranney Day projects. From wheelchairs to therapy to spills and more, the flooring can handle anything that comes its way.
Seventeen-year-old Nygil knows a thing or two about resiliency. His birth was truly miraculous. Nygil was delivered at 25-weeks gestation, weighed only one pound and 12 ounces, and doctors told his parents that he would not survive through the night. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, lung disease, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, quadriplegia, strabismus, asthma and retinal detachment. As Nygil grows, so does his need for in-home care and independence. His bedroom and bathroom makeover will give him a place to move into adulthood and escape from his daily struggles.
Priscilla may be little, but she has big plans with a bright future ahead of her. She has an extensive medical history which includes traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, hearing loss, congenital hydrocephalus and cortical visual impairment. Priscilla is non-ambulatory, nonverbal and is fed through a g-tube. She is currently receiving occupational, physical and speech-language therapies, is learning sign language and has begun to crawl. Along with SolidTech flooring, Priscilla’s bathroom will be tailored specifically for her with a zero-curb shower and accessible vanity.
“We are thankful for partners like Mohawk that help us change the lives of children like Nygil and Priscilla one room at a time,” explained Holly Ranney, co-founder and president, Sunshine on a Ranney Day. “From our first makeover to now, we are constantly reminded how impactful a makeover can be on a child’s life. The right flooring is key to maximize the space from a visual sense as well as a durability standpoint. We are grateful for Mohawk and look forward to working with them to bring sunshine into more homes.”
