The Ceramic Tile Education Foundation (CTEF) offered tile installers the opportunity to become CTEF Certified Tile Installers (CTIs) during Coverings 2009. Daltile recruited the majority of the candidates to be tested and donated the materials necessary for the hands-on portion of CTI testing, including membranes, backer board, thin-set, grout and flexible sealants.

Stephanie Samulski, CTEF instructor and TILE Magazine columnist; Tony Buttitta (5th place), Floor to Ceiling, Sycamore, IL, winner of European Tile Masters 10-piece diamond hole saw set; Benjamin Szell of ETM/Sigma; Thomas Lynch (4th place), Lynch Tile, Lansing, IL, winner of European Tile Masters 14-piece diamond hole saw set; Matthew Heinrichs (2nd place), Heinrichs Custom Tile & Stone, Menomonee Falls, WI, and winner of a 37-inch Sigma tile cutter, model 3D; Jeremiah Bartley (1st place), J.T.B. Tile, Orland Park, IL, and winner of Husqvarna Tilematic TS 250 X3 10-inch wet saw); Andy Lundberg, Husqvarna Construction Products; and Scott Carothers, CTEF executive director.
Third place winner Tom Bean, Douglas Carpet One, N. Aurora, IL, was not present to receive his 5M Sigma Cutter (glass mosaic cutter) prize.

In addition to earning the CTI designation, the three highest scoring installers earned exclusive prizes, including:
  • The highest scoring tile installer will receive a Husqvarna 10” Tilematic Wet Saw (Model TS250X3).
  • The second highest scorer receives a Sigma 3D Tile Cutter.
  • The third highest scorer will receive a European Tile Masters Hole Saw Kit (Model DB14PC).
Participants also received the following courtesy prizes: a tool and safety kit, supplied by MAPEI; a Euro-style notch trowel supplied by European Tile Masters; and a canvas, mason-style tool bag from Schluter Systems.
