Honeywell announced that it is laying off 65 workers at its carpet fiber plant in Irmo, S.C., citing reduced demand for its nylon staple fiber. A total of 395 employees will remain at the plant, which also manufacturers bulk continuous filament and specialty polymers.

Said Rob Norman, a spokesman for Honeywell Nylon, "We did announce last week at the Columbia site that there would be some internal operational changes, and some of that does include reduction in the workers there at the plant."

Norman noted that a decreased demand for nylon staple fiber impacted the plant.

"It really is a result of the decline in the industry demand for nylon staple fiber. Our [Irmo] plant is the only facility that we have that produces staple fiber."
