In a heartwarming demonstration of corporate social responsibility meeting community needs, what began as a simple flooring donation blossomed into a comprehensive renovation project at the Niles Township Respite Center in Naperville, Illinois. The initiative, spearheaded by flooring manufacturer Tarkett, has transformed the vital community space that serves residents facing housing and food insecurity.

The project's origins trace back to Tarkett's search for a meaningful way to give back to Chicago while planning their annual Design Days 2024 event. "Instead of focusing on one-off customer giveaways, we wanted to invest in something that could create lasting value for the community that hosts our industry each year," said Roxane Spears, Tarkett's vice president of sustainability.

What started as a flooring upgrade quickly evolved into something bigger. The initial scope included installing environmentally certified carpet tiles, luxury vinyl flooring, and safety-enhanced stair treads. However, the project's momentum attracted additional local contractors and businesses, expanding to encompass room expansions, ceiling adjustments, and fresh paint – all provided at no cost to the center.

"You can just feel everyone relax a little bit," said Ruth Orme-Johnson, a social worker at the center. The renovation has created what she describes as a "calm, positive and inviting environment" that not only welcomes clients but also instills a sense of dignity and possibility.

Michelle DeLuco, president of FloorsMD, who served as the onsite coordinator, was moved by the project's potential. "The center had such good bones and was already doing tremendous work for the community," she said. "It was very heart-pleasing to see what impact we could make with just a little bit of elbow grease and a group of people who cared."

The renovation's impact extends beyond aesthetics. The new flooring features soothing patterns and colors specifically chosen to create a more peaceful environment. The materials contribute to better indoor air quality, with Tarkett's Ethos carpet tiles boasting Cradle to Cradle Certified Silver status and recyclable components.

For the center's staff, the renovation has revolutionized their ability to serve the community. "The space allows the people we help believe they're capable and have the agency to take those steps that will have a positive impact on their lives long term," Orme-Johnson notes. The center continues to provide essential services including access to showers, laundry facilities, a clothing closet, and a food pantry – now in a more dignified setting.

Mike Isaacs, public relations outreach coordinator for Niles Township Government, summarizes the project's impact: "It's been really inspiring. Our gratitude is forevermore, that's for sure."

The initiative is part of Tarkett's global charitable giving program, Tarkett Cares, which has facilitated over 900 community initiatives and 3,800 employee volunteer days between 2017 and 2023. This particular project stands as a testament to how corporate social responsibility, when combined with local community engagement, can create meaningful change that extends far beyond physical improvements.
