Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) has requested CalRecycle's approval for an increase in carpet recycling fees, proposed to take effect February 1, 2025. The adjustment aims to meet new reserve requirements mandated by CalRecycle for year-end 2025.

The differential assessment, required by California law, funds the state's carpet recycling program through fees charged per square yard of carpet. These fees support collection, processing, and recycling operations, as well as technical assistance and education initiatives.

Under the proposed structure, fees will continue to be differentiated between broadloom and carpet tile products. Products containing 10% or more certified post-consumer content will receive a 9-cent per square yard reduction in assessment fees. Carpet manufacturers are tasked with certifying which products meet this recycled content threshold.

CARE advises retailers to prepare for potential fee adjustments, pending CalRecycle's approval. The organization will notify all stakeholders once a final decision is reached.
