McAdenville, N.C.-- Carpet yarn manufacturer Pharr was recently featured in a PBS broadcast for its efforts in transforming McAdenville, N.C., into Christmas Town USA. The 62nd annual Christmas Town USA display is gaining traction as one of the nation’s leading holiday celebrations, including recognition from Southern Living magazine. McAdenville has been the location of Pharr headquarters since 1939, and the tradition of Christmas Town USA in McAdenville is one example of Pharr’s re-investment in its community.
Pharr, parent company to Phenix Flooring, which merged into the Pharr family of companies in 2015, began the tradition in 1956 when the local Men’s Club decorated trees around the community center, which is now the Pharr Family YMCA. Christmas Town now displays more than 300 trees with well over 500,000 lights. There are approximately 600,000 visitors throughout the month of December to McAdenville, which has a population of fewer than 1,000. The display has an economic impact of close to $12 million annually, according to Pharr.
Christmas Town USA Christmas light celebrations begin on December 1st with the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and runs through December 26th. The historic bell tower in the heart of downtown, which dates back to the early 1880s, plays carols throughout the season, and a nearby lake is surrounded by more than 30 decorated trees, a 75-foot multi-colored water feature, and a vintage Christmas display of Old Man Winter. Carillon bells play Christmas carols all season long at the William J. Pharr Family YMCA.
