Wools of New Zealand will be exhibiting rugs colored with gold to unveil a new fiber technology at the International Surface Event, which will be held Jan. 20 to 23 in Las Vegas.
Ten years ago, Mohawk Industries launched the SmartStrand carpet brand featuring triexta fiber and it quickly rose to become the most successful product introduction in the company’s history, which dates back to 1878.
Recessions generally are a time when an industry buckles itself in to weather the storm but within the carpet industry winds of change have been taking place that have altered the landscape to the point where it may never be the same again.
As I retailer myself I, too, have had these calls from customers who say, “My carpet is flattening out.” Well I’m sorry to break the news to you and the fiber companies/mills that make and sell soft yarns: They’re supposed to flatten.
Mohawk upped the ante in the synthetic fiber area a couple of years ago with the introduction of SmartStrand, bringing built-in soil and stain resistance and new levels of durability to carpet, not to mention putting sustainability in the industry on a new plane.
