The National Retail Federation has issued a statement from David French, senior vice president for government relations following a news conference with state and local officials who urged Congress to act on sales tax fairness legislation in the lame duck session.

“Congress has delayed action on this retail industry priority for far too long," he said. "Now is the time for action. Now is the time for Congress to pass sales tax fairness legislation.

“Failure to pass this commonsense measure threatens the viability of Main Street merchants and small business owners who live and work in communities across America.

“A healthy and vibrant retail sector is essential to local communities, particularly for strong employment and a stable tax base. To ensure the vitality of local retailers, we need Congress to level the sales tax playing field once and for all.”
